How to Make the Most of Your Winter Break: A Guide for College Students

College Campus Takes a Winter Snooze

Winter break is a time for rest. A time for celebration. For recharging. How can you make the most of it without feeling like you're wasting time?

The first step to a meaningful winter break is clarity. Ask yourself: what do you want to get out of this time? If you’ve been pouring your energy into academics and career goals all semester, there’s no rule that says your break has to be about the same—unless an internship or unique opportunity truly excites you. Instead, consider what would genuinely make you happy and energized, whether that’s catching up on rest, pursuing hobbies, or reconnecting with loved ones.

A common trap is "vegging out" in ways that feel restful but leave you more drained—think endless Netflix binges or scrolling on your phone. While those can be fine in moderation, aim to fill your days with activities that actually recharge you. Spend time outdoors, do something away from home, think of something nice to do for someone else, or dive into something creative. Pro tip: involve friends or family in your plans. It’s harder to get stuck in a cycle of nothingness when others are counting on you to show up.

Another challenge students often face is guilt. Resting can feel unproductive, especially in a world that constantly encourages hustle. However, there is no "on" without some "off." True rest fuels your energy, motivation, and focus. By giving yourself permission to recharge you’re actually setting yourself up for success in the long run.

To strike the right balance, mix a little structure with spontaneity. Plan a few key activities you’re excited about but leave room to follow your instincts. Push yourself to overcome those small activation barriers that make it tempting to say, “I’ll just stay home.” For example, if you realize that you don’t want to go hang out with friends not because of the friends, but because you don’t want to get dressed for the day–try to force yourself to do it. You’ll rarely regret the effort to connect with people or try something new, but you will regret letting inertia dictate how you spend your precious time off.

Last thing: when the next semester rolls around, carry this approach with you. Schedule smaller breaks (e.g., take Saturdays completely off ), prioritize meaningful connections, and resist the urge to grind nonstop. Winter break isn’t just a pause—it’s an opportunity to recharge and refocus and reimagine how you live.
